  • What does 'Talquale' mean? This expression 'Tal quale' is used in Italian to indicate that this wine is produced exactly as it was originally, without making any modifications or alterations.

It was likely the Illyrians, an ancient population devoted to grape cultivation living in what is now Croatia, who introduced the grape variety to Apulia, where it adapted perfectly. The earliest certain historical traces of Primitivo date back to the 18th century when an ecclesiastic from Gioia del Colle, Don Francesco Filippo Indelicati, left the first written testimonies about the grape. Indelicati described a grapevine that matured earlier than others, yielding particularly dark, sweet, and flavorful grapes, ready for harvest as early as August. The history of this grape variety, as we know it today, begins with the work of this clergyman, who selected and named it Primitivo. Primitivo reached the Salento region through a marriage, that between Countess Sabini of Altamura and Tommaso Schiavoni – Tafuri of Manduria.
